My desire to alleviate the sufferings of people with disabilities and restore their loss societal status can be traced to my personal experiences of stigmatization and discrimination during my school days. As a physically challenged person, I have been perceived by my peers and beyond as one who has lost it all in life. Since then, I have been making endless effort to prove them wrong. To this regard, my childhood friend who stays partly in United States and Nigeria asked passionately about my heart desire On making declaration of this vocation, he

advised me to study Social Work in order to understand the guidelines in which I can comfortably work to better the lives of people. In my activities in the university, I clearly understood the level and effects of discrimination on the physically challenged people. How it has contributed to deteriorate the person with disabilities in their efforts to survive. I was denied the the opportunity of being the financial secretary of my faculty the (social sciences) and department in two attempts in ttwo successive years only because there was a general belief |

belief that I can not do it even when the authority was convinced beyond all reasonable doubts that I can serve diligently. Through this, I realized that the frustration suffered by the physically challenged people cannot be traced to the deformity rather the negative attitude from the public. Through this, I realized that the frustration suffered by the physically challenged people cannot be traced to the deformity rather the negative attitude from the public. The experiences shared with me by the physically challenged street beggars during the mobilization of them to participate on two- day capacity building programme on tie and dye/batik and soap production which took place on December 2007 convinced me that they have not enjoyed friendly atmosphere to be more meaningful to the society. It has been glaring that the root cause of street begging among people with disabilities can be traced to the negative attitude of people (normal people) towards them. Their relations and other people sees them as no good” or “ useless” therefore need not to waste resources on them rather the resources should be channeled to those who are more productive, this leads to denial of adequate or right supports for these segment of people to discover their potentials. They became frustrated because they have been denied the good things of life which left them with the last resort or undesirable option of begging. In Africa, people with disabilities have |

been discriminated against by so called normal people evidently by the non inclusion of the disabled people in the policy making. Coping with disability have posed an uphill task because of the negative attitudes which ranges from stereotyping, derogatory labeling, depersonalization which have lead to denial of opportunities and other decent things of life. The persons with disabilities have perceived as being helpless, mindless, suffering and deserve only sympathy, because they are simply burdens and depend on others for survival which implies that there are useless to the society. This has consequen- |

-tly leads to loss of societal value. Regrettably, the problems created by this scenario have been wrongly approached which this publication is poised to address. The public have presumed that the solution is giving out alms which has succeeded in dehumanizing and deteriorated the persons with disabilities greatly in our contemporary societies. Qualitative magazine is poised to celebrate Africans with disabilities in a special way as a means of motivating, encouraging people with disabilities and most importantly advocating for Africans with disabilities. It is agreeable that this magazine posed to be an effective tool that will bring attitudinal change towards the persons with disabilities and also provide the basic principles in which parents, policy makers, religious organizations, charity homes/NGOS, Disabled people’s associations and people with disabilities can find appropriate to address issues of welfare provision, stigmatizations and empowerment of people with disabilities. |
